The Helen Stevens Gallery

The Artist

Ms Stevens is a gifted painter who was born in Trieste, Italy to a busy military family. After leaving Italy the family lived in Georgia, Alabama, Virginia, Alaska, Pennsylvania and Maryland. She has attended the University of Maryland, the Philadelphia Museum College of Fine Art, Pasadena City College and San Francisco State University. She is a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, the Graphic Artist Guild and the Maine Arts Commission.

Ms Stevens is a visual chronicler of the psychological forces that frame our daily lives. She believes that insights into the human condition lie all around us; we only need to look closer to see them.

Her use of meticulous detail creates a unique reality in every painting. This realism is not an end in itself but rather the means for creating a visual metaphor that extends beyond the literal representation. It is this use of metaphor that gives her work a power and strength that moves beyond the image. In her work common items found on a beach can become a chronometer that hands back the control of time and a door decoration symbolizes a family's unbroken bond.

Ms Stevens has two adult children, an assortment of pets, and lives with her husband in Gardiner, Maine. Although she loves to travel she always looks forward to returning because after all, home is where the heart is.
